How to create Corporate Colours in a Dashboard
Introduction
Hi there! Welcome back to our blog!!!
In this particular session, I will be showing you a really cool trick on how to add bespoke colours, for example, your company's corporate colours, to your dashboards, whether in Excel, Power BI or any other visualization tools. If you are presenting a model or dashboard in your current company, this little trick will ensure that your presentation looks really professional and is line with the company's branding theme.
A colour's unique identification colour
Each colour that you use in Excel or in other tools has a unique identification. Either:
- a combination of red, blue an green (RGB) colours
- a unique hex code
If you look at something typed in red in an Excel cell:
1. From the Excel Ribbon select: Home tab > Font group and select the
2. Select More Colours at the bottom of the Theme Colours Box
3. Click on Custom
4. You can see that the RGB codes for red is 255, 0, 0 and the Hex code = #FF0000
5. If you can determine the exact colour codes for your company's branding, then you can type in either the RGB codes or the Hex code, and use them in your models
Extracting the exact codes for your chosen colour(s)
There are many free websites that will help you with this.
One website we tend to use is imagecolorpicker.com. We will use this site to extract the colour codes for the green for our Insights+Modelling logo.
1. Save a picture containing your chosen colour to a file.
2. Go to the website https://imagecolorpicker.com/
3. Load your saved image up onto the website
- Select the Use Your Image button at the bottom of the page
- Then select Browse or drop any image as below and choose your picture file and click on Open
4. Your picture will appear in the website, together with a pallette of matching colours
5. If you hover over a colour on the image, you will get the codes supplied below:
6. In our example, you can see that the RGB code for our Theta I+M green is 177, 174, 255 and the Hex code = #44b1ae
Using your chosen colour in Excel
1. To add the colour into your Excel pallette, pull up the colour box as in (3) above
2. Type in either the RGB codes or Hex code and click OK:
3. Go back into the Theme Colours Box and you will see that your chosen colour is available for selection under Recent colours
Using your chosen colour in Power BI
1. Open up the Power BI Desktop and go into the Report view
2. Select View from the menu ribbon
3. Click on the down arrow to the right of the colour schemes
4. Scroll to the bottom and select Customize current theme
5. Click on the down arrow to the right of the colour you wish to customize, for example, select Color 1
6. Type in either the RGB codes or Hex code (I typed in the Hex code) and click on Apply
7. Click on Apply again
8. Your chosen colour will be available for selection:
